Kitty Beach shares the influences that shaped her new single, “Fading Away,” which explores the quiet grief of watching a loved one change.

The Cranberries, “Linger”

A classic that everyone loves oh so deeply. This song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being unable to let go of someone you truly care about. Similar to the feeling portrayed in my track Fading Away, which demonstrates the fear of not having enough time with a loved one before they go. The Cranberries create such an impactful, tragic atmosphere by utilising soft vocals and acoustic strings; I simply Can’t get enough of it.

Cavetown, “Juliet”

I love how Cavetown uses metaphors to paint complex emotions in a way that’s peaceful and enjoyable to listen to. Juliet is a beautiful song about growing apart from someone you used to love, and how painful it can be to let them go. Everyone wants to be loved and understood, especially by family and their own self, while dealing with rejection and change. Cavetown does a wonderful job of blending almost muffled vocals, acoustic instruments, and occasional electronic sounds within Juliet.

Jack River, “In infinity”

Literally one of my fav songs ever. In infinity to me screams emotionally stuck, wanting reassurance and connection and the fear of separation. Listening to this song makes me feel so lonely yet so connected at the same time. Jack River is a local legend goodness. Her soft vocals create such a dreamy atmosphere, one where I feel safe to be vulnerable and emotionally in tune.

Taylor Swift,“The Best Day”

I don’t think there’s a better song that expresses family connection/love than Miss Swift’s The Best Day. I knew I always wanted to create something similar, more specifically, a love letter to my own Dad. Although Fading Away isn’t as uplifting, the same amount of passion is there – we yearn for more time with the ones we love. Taylor’s sound here is gentle and heartfelt, with light acoustic music and sincere vocals.

Beabadoobee, “Together”

A song I would describe as short and sweet but still hard hitting. I take great inspiration from Beabadoobee, especially her early, very raw acoustic tracks. I think her and my sound are growing in similar ways. “Together” sits on a louder and more rock driven level for Beabadoobee, which I really love. This track revolves around wanting closeness while struggling with emotional pain, something I relate to all too well which comes in Fading Away. It’s also a great example of having well balanced vulnerable lyrics with intimate vocal moments – making those feelings within the track come out more raw and honest.
