Ash Acid on unpacking the grit, glow, and growing pains behind her new single release “LMN” Featuring Danielle Fedoruk.
How do you keep your sound evolving while still staying true to what defines the band?
Collaboration. I will always identify as a rock artist, but depending on who writes with me or who produces the body of work or who plays on the release, my ‘rock’ sound changes. I think rock started with Little Richard and look at it now, it is its own universe.
What lessons has being in a band taught you about teamwork?
I’ve been in bands since I was 14, and actually, Danielle who I wrote this track with, well she was one of the girls who I first played Nirvana and Hole in our high school drum room. I think being in a band teaches you to wake up each day and start again, forgive again. It also eventually leads to being more honest, as once you know someone well, you can’t hide your feelings like you may have done at the beginning, haha.
If someone discovers your band for the first time today, which song should they start with and why?
The new single ‘LMN.’ It’s definitely an edgier direction for me as an artist. I wrote the song with my high school buddy Danielle Fedoruk, and it’s just ironic that we met as teenagers and this song is about a teenager grappling with her sexuality, her family and her mental health. I feel that most of us can relate to this triangular nightmare!!
When you start writing a new song, what usually comes first — a feeling, a lyric, a melody, or a groove?
I can’t share all my secrets!! But one thing I can share is that it seems to be all there inside of us, you just have to be paying attention to it.
What’s a song in your catalogue that fans connect with in a way you didn’t expect?
A lot of people said they love the funky rock riffs in ‘I Love Myself.’ I mean, guitarists have said this to me. It’s incredible to hear these compliments and also Jono Peters is an excellent guitarist.
