ELYK shares 5 songs that explore technology and human connection on their latest single, SUNDAY
Eddie Robinson, “Absolutely Beautiful”
The piano loop at the start of this song holds down the melody to ‘Sunday’. I found a YouTube beat back in 2021 that sampled this song and kind of just ran with the loop. It sounded so good! We’ve sped it up and made it super groovy so it’s hard to tell now that it’s gone through so much change.
Denzel Curry, “Melt Session #1”
Lyrically, Denzel is someone I have always looked up to when writing. This track is a great example of just rapping about your life, it makes for great narrative writing when you “take a ride on [your] train of thought” and see where your words go.
Robert Glasper (feat. Mac Miller), “Therapy pt. 2”
Music really is therapeutic. Writing it even more so. I was listening to this song on repeat in 2022 around the same time most of the lyrics were written. I think for us it shows how good collaboration is. ‘Sunday’ would not sound how it does now had we not all given our 2 cents and then some.
Logic, “Warm It Up”
Funnily, the drums to ‘Sunday’ sound very boom bap-esque. I listened to so much Logic when I was younger and I think the drums really lean into that 90s boom bap style that logic had, especially at the start of this song. Once the other instruments come in it turns into its own sound sonically.
Ball Park Music, “It’s Nice To Be Alive”
I think ‘Sunday’ holds the same sensation as this track, life is great and we are fortunate we get to live it. As pessimistic some of our lyrics can be, at the end of the song it’s about lifting you up. A reminder to get off your devices and live your life with friends or MUSIC (maybe both).
