Abeny Hayes shares 5 songs that influenced the songwriting for her latest EP, DEATHBED CONFESSIONAL
Lizzy McAlpine, “Soccer Practice”
Lizzy McAlpine has me in a chokehold, shaping me as an artist since I first heard her. The musical evolution through every new album is pure genius and it teaches me to experiment as a songwriter.
‘Soccer Practice’ and ‘Untold Thing’ both start subtle and heartfelt then begin intensifying alongside the lyrics creating such a unique immersive experience.
Searows, “Dearly Missed”
Searows is an absolute lyrical genius. As someone who holds lyrics so highly in their songwriting, I would not be where I am without his influence.
‘Dearly Missed’ inspired ‘Untold Thing’ with the journeys of intensifying and calming to intensify again. Searows was actually my first introduction to an ebow which is an instrument used in ‘Dearly Missed’ and ‘Untold Thing’.
Florence Road, Storm Warnings
Florence Road is another favourite of mine. The epic rock sound was definitely an inspiration for this track. All-female bands are so cool and something I’d love to see more of.
‘Storm Warnings’ and ‘Untold Thing’ share a lot musically to support the chaotic emotion in the lyrics. Their similar themes encapsulate feminine rage, resentment and the aftermath.
Adrianne Lenker, “Symbol“
So many of my friends and family have related my music to Adrianne Lenkers which is the biggest compliment I could receive.
Lyrics and chords are such powerful tools that ‘Symbol’ and ‘Untold Thing’ use to their advantage. Being able to encapsulate emotion and move it through switching from minor to major.
Radiohead, “Airbag“
Radiohead is a huge inspiration to me. The way they use electric guitars, chords and melodies to set a creepy atmosphere is embedded itself into my music.
‘Airbag’ and ‘Untold Thing’ create an eerie feeling built through tension, immersive lyricism. Both these songs experiment with electric guitars in weird, interesting ways that add to the uneasy feeling.
