Five tracks handpicked by Girl From Nowhere that shaped her colourful new release, “Orange Light”
One of my favourite tracks off one of my favourite albums! From distorted synthesisers, to filthy, electroclash beats, I’m always unpacking new sounds and layers with each listen. They’ve really inspired me to experiment with found sound, and processing them until they’ve taken on a new form.
Mitski, “First Love/Late Spring “
Mitski is one of my greatest lyrical inspirations. She captures raw emotion through such a cinematic lens; as if she’s writing from inside my head. This song and this album was basically the soundtrack to my life when I was making my first EP.
I went down a big synthwave/darkwave rabbit hole when I first made my latest single 2 years ago. I was struggling with a lot of mental dysphoria, and found myself driving around my neighbourhood a lot at 2am. And what’s better than late-night driving music than some good old synth-wave? There’s a certain anemoia in cascading synths and 80s drums that can’t be found anywhere else – like I’m lonely, but in a cool-dystopian-film way, you know?
Cocteau Twins, “Wolf in the Breast “
This opening guitar riff makes me want to cry every time – something so deeply lush and warm that transcends anything else I’ve ever heard. Obviously one of the most influential bands in the dreampop space, the way they recorded and wrote music has been central to the evolution of my sound.
Japanese Breakfast, “Posing in Bondage”
Another massive inspiration for me. Michelle Zauner, the woman that you are!! I’m obsessed with the way this song builds and the different sonic textures that have been layered here. Another great song to listen to on a late-night drive.
